| Reason:
The White Mountains Alberta Arctic (Oeneis alberta daura) is a remnant tundra subspecies abandoned in southern Arizona and New Mexico as temperatures have warmed. As it currently exists this taxa is a high alpine specialist on just a couple of high peaks and cienegas in the white mountains and San Francisco peaks in Arizona. With records existing from only one peak in New Mexico. Climate warming has extirpated populations just to the south of this locality and it is unlikely without conservation intervention that this butterfly will survive until 2100 even with just a small amount of additional climate warming. This butterfly is also expected to see a continuing decline in number of subpopulations, EOO, and AOO due to climate change. It has already been observed to be extirpated in southeastern Arizona due to climate warming and its habitat is expected to continue getting hotter and drier over the next century. As a result, the White Mountains Alberta Arctic is currently assessed as S1 in New Mexico. However, a reassessment should be done if more information becomes available.
|
