| Reason: Pieras marginalis siblanca also known as the Sierra Blanca Margined White is a newly described and poorly known endemic butterfly to the Sacramento Mountains complex in New Mexico. This area is at the southern extreme of the parent species range and as such it is expected that just a small amount of climate warming will cause this taxas extinction. As such it is not expected that this butterfly will survive until 2100 without direct conservation attention to manage the many threats affecting this butterfly. The extent of occurrence for this species is approximately 834km2 and the area of occupancy could be as low as 192km2. Due to climate change, fire suppression, invasive species, and catastrophic wildfire this butterfly also has an expected continuing decline in the extent and or quality of its habitat. As a result, the Sierra Blanca Margined White is currently assessed as S2 in New Mexico. However, a reassessment should be done if more information becomes available. |
