| Reason: The Apache Northern Crescent (<em>Phyciodes cocyta apache</em>) is endemic to the Sacramento Mountains in southern New Mexico, where it is found in cool, stream side habitats. In the last 30 years, it has been recorded six times. The AOO currently is just 7km2 but may be slightly higher with increased survey effort. Due to the real risk of wildfire, the recent occurrences may group into three locations. In fact, a couple of 2024 wildfires burned two of the remaining sites and came within 1.5 km of burning an additional two sites. However, as many as seven locations are possible, if the species remains extant in all historic localities. There are 21 occurrences total, though in several cases, neighboring occurrences can be grouped into one location as they are within a few km of each other and could simultaneously be impacted by one wildfire. Because of the threat of catastrophic wildfire, continuing decline in habitat area, extent, and quality is inferred. Therefore, the species is considered S1 in New Mexico. However, a reassessment should be done if more information becomes available. |
