Reason: <em>Caenotus inornatus</em> is a fly in the family Scenopinidae, known only from the type locality in New Mexico, USA. It is unclear whether the species has not been recorded since it was described because surveys have not been carried out, or because the species is rare. Additional surveys may reveal the species is sufficiently widespread and abundant, with no major threats. On the other hand, as the species has been collected just once, it could be severely range restricted and at risk to localized threats, and therefore may be Critically Endangered. Due to only being known from one occurrence and not having been recorded in over 100 years the species is currently assessed as S1 in New Mexico however, surveying and inventorying may reveal that the species is not actually rare.
