Reason: The Mottled Duskywing (<em>Erynnis martialis</em>) is a skipper that was historically found in oak savannas, pine barrens, and prairie hills across much of eastern North America. The species is now rare or known to be extirpated from approximately 40% of its historical distribution. While the population size is unknown, long term population declines have been documented. A population reduction of 84% is estimated over the last 10 years. This estimate was obtained from count data collected at over 40 sites across the remaining range of the species over the last two decades, by various butterfly monitoring programs. Furthermore there are only three known occurrence records in New Mexico and the habitat for the butterfly in the state is geographically limited and threatened. As a result, the Mottled Duskywing is listed as S1 in New Mexico.
