| Reason: Nemoria rindgei is an emerald moth endemic to several Sky Island Mountain Ranges in the Chihuahuan Desert. It is known only from the Sacramento, Brokeoff, and Guadalupe Mountains in southern New Mexico and west Texas. This species has a very low AOO although it may be underestimated, as the survey effort has been minimal. The number of occurrences is likely between nine and 15 with a best estimate of 12. The upper bound of 15 includes all known occurrences, historic and recent, which are currently known for the species. Presumably, these will be impacted individually by localized threats such as air pollution, reduced host plant availability due to drought, or pesticide use. The lower bound groups several occurrences that are in close enough proximity that they could feasibly be impacted simultaneously by threats such as catastrophic wildfire. In addition, continuing decline in habitat quality is inferred due to climate change and increased incidence of drought, extreme air pollution caused by oil and gas extraction, and encroachment of nonnative plant species outcompeting native grassland species that may serve as larval host. Given the rarity of this species, 12 occurrences were used and the species is assessed as S2 in New Mexico. |
