Reason: The Southern Rockies Magdalena Alpine (Erebia magdalena magdalena) is a tundra species that occurs on mountain peaks in the Rocky mountains of the Western United States. The population size and trend is not known for this butterfly. The butterfly has an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) of 48km2 and an Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 48km2. Additionally the Southern Rockies Magdalena Alpine is only known from two locations in New Mexico Wheeler Peak and State Line Peak. Many butterflies respond to climate change by moving to higher elevations and as an alpine subspecies this butterfly can no longer move to higher elevations. The western United States is continuing to get hotter and drier due to climate change and as a result this butterfly has a continuing decline inferred in area, extent and quality of habitat. As a result at this time the Southern Rockies Magdalena Alpine is assessed as S1 in New Mexico. However, a reassessment should be done as new information becomes available.
