| Area of Occupancy: "The total area of gypseous soils within the range of this species around the Yeso Hills and Alkali Lakes includes some 200,000 to 400,000 acres in New Mexico and adjacent Texas, but Abronia nealleyi appears to occur only in small, localized patches of 5-20 individuals scattered along drainages and bottomlands so that the total potential habitat is perhaps 1-3% of that total, and the occupied habitat a small fraction of the potential." -Cecilia Alexander<br/>Based on this comment, the potential habitat is anywhere from 2000-12000 acres (8-49 sqkm). If actual occupied area is less than that, B (5-10 sqkm) or C (11-20 sqkm) could be appropriate estimates. If I choose "B" as the rating, the rank is calculated as S1. If I choose "C" as the rating, the rank is calculated as "S3." Based on the range and comments from Patrick Alexander, S1 seems too low, but the AOO is more likely to be on the lower end.<br/>Katie Sandbom says "For a range within NM, I get 1,402 km2, and for potential habitat within NM (based on Alexander's NMGyp model), I get 167 km2. The species is sparsely distributed within (occupies a very small proportion of) those 167 km2 of potential habitat. It would be generous to say that even 1% is occupied, but we can go with Alexander's 1-3%, which gives us 1.67–5.01 km2 estimated area of occupancy (not using grids).
