Reason: While widespread across much of the United States where it can be very generalist in habitat in New Mexico this species has a very narrow life history thriving in open meadows, grasslands, and montane habitats, especially where diverse wildflower species are present. These areas are often highly limited in New Mexico and threatened by cattle grazing, drought, and pesticide use. As a result, despite this species large Extent of Occurrence it has a relatively small Area of Occupancy of just 70km2 however, these are widely spaced out and the species is known from 53 occurrences a relatively large number. However, despite this Bombus fervidus has been found to be declining due to a variety of threats in many other places in the United States. These threats include climate change, grazing, introduced diseases and pesticide use. It is unknown currently if similair declines are happening from these threats in New Mexico. As a result, this species is currently assessed as S3 in New Mexico however, a reassessment should be done if more information becomes available.<br/><br/>Bombus fervidus, has been petitioned as a ‘Potential Species of Conservation Concern’ in the Blue Mountains National Forests <a href="https://www.zotero.org/google-docs/?zr6h0A">(Mazur et al. 2012)</a>, a mountain range in the northwestern United States considered to be a semi-arid steppe, with a similar elevational range and gradient, and over similarity to the local preferred habitat of B. fervidus in New Mexico.
