General Description

Boreal Toad (Anaxyrus boreas) is a medium-sized (6-10 cm) toad with dry, warty skin. They are distributed along western North America from southern Alaska to Baja California. In New Mexico, they are only found in north-central Rio Arriba County between 2,774-3,200 m in the San Juan Mountains at Canjilon, Trout, and Lagunitas lakes. They inhabit a wide range of aquatic habitats from desert springs to mountain wetlands and will occur at elevations as high as 3,658 m. Because they lack vocal sacs, they do not call, but will occasionally make small chirps, especially when in duress.

Hammerson, NatureServe, "Given that reintroduction is in progress at a historical locality, I’d rank it S1. We have plenty of S1s that are on the margin of existence, so this situation isn’t really all that different. I believe our policy always has been to use S# for species that were extirpated from a state but then reintroduced within the former range. I’d use SX only if it were blatantly clear that the reintroduction was doomed to failure; that’s not the case in this situation. I’d not use C for this situation because there is not really a captive population in NM."
