Reason: Euphydryas anicia chuskae also known as the Chuskae Anicia Checkerspot or San Juan Checkerspot Butterfly is a montane species endemic to the Chuska mountains in northwestern New Mexico and northeastern Arizona. This species has a very small range existing only on this one small mountain range and as a result has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of just 67km2 in New Mexico. This butterfly also has a low Area of Occupancy of just 80km2. This species threats are under researched however, the species seems to be very threatened due to climate change, drought, invasive species, catastrophic wildfire and fire suppression all of which is magnified by the taxas metapopulation dynamics and other life history traits. As this taxas range continues to get hotter and drier declines are expected to continue in the species EOO, AOO, quality of habitat as well as number of subpopulations. As this species only lives in a single small mountain range one extended drought or large climactic event could potentially cause the extirpation of this entire subspecies. As a result, this taxa is currently assessed as S2 in New Mexico. However, a reassessment should be done if more information becomes available.
