| Reason: Vanessa annabella, also known as the West Coast Lady, is found in meadows, valleys, and woodlands throughout much of western North America. Although it was once common throughout much of its range, especially in lowland California, it appears to have declined substantially. As of 2015, one study of four sites across the Sacramento Valley of California, found population declines of as much as 69% over a ten year period for this species. More recently, widespread long term population declines have been documented. A population reduction of 57% is estimated over the last 10 years. This estimate was obtained from count data collected over 50 sites across the region, over the last two decades, by various butterfly monitoring programs. However, very little if none of this data came from New Mexico and so it is unknown if a similar trend is occurring with our populations. However, the butterfly does face a variety of threats here and as a result, this butterfly is currently assessed as S3 in New Mexico however, if monitoring in the state should reveal similar trends than a higher rank is needed. |
