Reason: Euphydryas anicia is widespread in New Mexico being found across a large Extent of Occurrence and many mountain ranges. However, upon closer examination many of these subspecies appear to be struggling and highly threatened in the state. The most obvious of these is the federally listed <i>E.a. cloudcrofti </i>which now has not been seen in the wild for several years. However, <i>E.a. capella </i>has also not been seen for a long time despite searching and faces similair threats. <i>E.a. brucei </i>and <i>E.a. chuskae </i>are both thought to be highly threatened by climate change and the largest known colony of <i>E.a. hermosa </i>is known to have recently extirpated. While the threats are regional every subspecies faces some level of threat and many face high levels of threat. Furthermore, the species has a relatively low Area of Occupancy despite the recent conservation attention on it and how flashy it is. It also has a relatively low number of occurrences. As a result, of all of this and a continuing decline in the quality and extent of its habitat this species is currently assessed as S3 in New Mexico. However, a reassessment should be done if more information becomes available.
