| Reason: Oeneis chryxus socorro, also known as the Socorro Arctic, is a subspecies native to a single half of a mountain range in south central New Mexico. This species has hardly ever been recorded and has a tiny range. Additionally, this species is thought to be extremely threatened by warming temperatures. At the extreme far south of Oeneis chryxus’s range this species is already under quite a bit of temperature stress and further increasing temperatures are likely to exterminate the species. The population size and trends are not known for this species and it has not been seen in several years and so efforts should be made to go out and identify the taxa to make sure it hasn't already gone extinct. As a result, this species is currently assessed as S1 in New Mexico. |
