Reason: The Sacramento Mountains Western Green Hairstreak (<em>Callophrys affinis albipalpus</em>) is a poorly known butterfly, endemic to the Sierra Blanca and Sacramento Mountains, in southern New Mexico. This subspecies is a specialist on post fire early successional habitats, and has therefore likely experienced long term declines due to fire suppression programs. This butterfly has only been seen three times in the last thirty years, and it has not been recorded since 2004. Furthermore, the colony at the type locality is presumed extirpated. Therefore continuing decline in EOO, AOO, and locations has been observed. While the current distribution is not well understood, the best estimate for the number of locations is two to four. A fifth location, the type locality, has been lost. Three localities are in the Sacramento Mountains and one is in the Sierra Blanca. Each locality presumably faces the primary threats separately. These threats include fire suppression and catastrophic wildfire due to altered fire regimes, as well as habitat loss due to climate change. Continuing decline in the extent and quality of habitat is inferred, due to these threats as well as others such as drought and pesticide use. As a result, the Sacramento Mountains Western Green Hairstreak is currently assessed as S1 in New Mexico.
